Kindergarten

The DCSS FLEX Academy Kindergarten program has taken flight! FLEX Academy knows that kindergarten is often the first opportunity for children to understand that school is a place for working and learning (and that learning and working are fun!). A great kindergarten experience is part of a strong foundation for a child’s future. Virtual Kindergarten is quite the concept! The main questions I had about virtual school stemmed from my personality as a "classroom teacher." How do I make connections with my kids virtually? Do kindergarteners sit and attend during instruction? Will I build relationships with my families as I have for over a decade in Douglas County? Although it looks different in our FLEX Academy learning community, the answer to those questions is a resounding YES! Kids are kids, and they notice everything. You make their day wearing the same color or a similar hairstyle, and all's right with the world if you share a love for the same character or theme. The relationships with my families are the same but for the fact that I practically have a dozen room moms instead of one.

Calvert Digital, the FLEX K-5 curriculum, is rigorous and fast paced. The challenging curriculum offers an abundance of resources from simple to complex, depending on the student’s needs. My time with my FLEX families is spent directing learning guides through the platform while bridging gaps between online learning and the kindergarten curriculum.

Much like my traditional classroom, my kinders are developing a love for learning in a safe space built upon truth, respect, and grace. I am thankful to be a small part of their journey.
